To assist healthcare and non-healthcare facilities in planning and optimizing the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) resources for the response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed the NIOSH Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Tracker. This tool can be utilized not only for COVID-19 preparedness but also in contexts where PPE shortages may arise due to supply chain disruptions related to the pandemic, such as manufacturing facilities or correctional facilities.

The NIOSH PPE Tracker application is designed to calculate the average consumption rate, known as the "burn rate." This feature enables healthcare personnel and facilities to monitor their stock of various PPE components, including gowns and respirators, by inputting the quantities on hand. By estimating remaining PPE supplies based on consumption rates, users can better manage and forecast their needs. Additionally, users can input patient numbers to determine PPE burn rates per patient, facilitating real-time tracking of changes in PPE utilization with fluctuations in patient volumes. Noteworthy enhancements over the PPE Burn Rate Calculator Excel spreadsheet include a user-friendly interface and the capacity to incorporate restock data.
